Post-Stroke Pain Relief and Mobility Gains after PSE Treatment by Dr. Tobinick, 2 Years after Stroke

About This Video

A patient who traveled from Hong Kong to the Institute of Neurological Recovery in Boca Raton, Florida to receive Perispinal Etanercept (PSE) treatment shares her symptoms following a stroke suffered on Valentine’s Day 2024.

Having consulted 18 medical professionals without finding sufficient relief from standard neuropathic medications, the patient describes her pre-treatment baseline—including severe body-wide sensory discomfort, hand tremors, double vision, and stiffness—and documents her real-time observations immediately following the procedure.

Patient-Reported Changes Featured in This Video

  • Reduction in Neuropathic Discomfort & Pain: Prior to treatment, the patient described her post-stroke neuropathy as a 10/10 persistent sensation akin to “fire ants” all over her body. Immediately post-treatment, she reported a reduction in pain score down to a 4 to 6, noting that the sharp, burning sensation had significantly subsided.
  • Resolution of Double Vision & Visual Clarity: The patient noted that her double vision disappeared completely—even when turning her head—allowing her to read small text clearly.
  • Hand Control & Reduced Tremors: Previously experiencing hand tremors and involuntary clinching (“claw hands”) that made holding cups or cutlery difficult, the patient demonstrated the ability to hold a cup stably with one hand without crushing it or spilling.
  • Improved Mobility & Reduced Stiffness: The patient reported that lifting her arms and standing up from a chair felt noticeably lighter and required less physical effort, while her neck stiffness resolved.
  • Gait Stability & Balance: The patient demonstrated a more confident, steady walk without holding onto armchairs or fearing a fall.
  • Speech Fluidity & Temperature Regulation: The patient noted easier, faster speech articulation with less vocal effort, alongside a reduction in the persistent cold sensation she had previously experienced.

So, you live in the Philippines? Yes, from Cebu City, but we are based in Hong Kong. Uh, after 48 hours of travel, we are finally here to see you, doctor. When did you have your stroke? So, it happened on Valentine’s Day 2024. It’s the neuropathy that’s really bothering me and my balance and my mobility. So I’ve gone to 18 doctors over two years basically. Um they just gave us the same group of medicine like Lica and an anti-depressant baklofen but yeah no it doesn’t help. I would call it sand all over my body. It’s not just one side or left side or right side. It’s all my all over my body from my from down here until the soles of my feet. That’s what happens to me every day 247. And then um it’s not only that, it also makes everything so tight and heavy. Like just to lift my arm, it takes a lot of effort just to get up on the seat. Yeah. My joints can all move, right? my knees, my my feet, my hands, but um it’s very tight. It’s very it’s very sharp. It’s very heavy. The my hands jerk a lot. So, I call them claw hands because when I would take my glass to drink or use my fork and knife to slice and to eat, then it gets so messy. That’s why sometimes I get spoonfed. I was given um paper cup with orange juice. I am scared that I might crush it because I don’t know my the strength of my hands and then like the tremors also. Yeah. So I I can’t really trust myself to feed myself and this arm this one with the sublux it feels like it doesn’t belong to my body like I don’t have a control over it. What is happening with your pain over the last year? It’s getting stiffer. It’s getting heavier. And two days ago, I I said to my husband, um, the sand that I described, it’s not it’s not sand anymore. It’s become fire ants because they’re getting bigger and sharper. Yeah, I get cold all the time. I get very cold easily.

I have a very hard time when I turn because I get dizzy. It It’s double vision when I walk

on the right. It’s lighter.

I can read the letters there. Even the small ones. Yeah, I think it’s better. and my right hand. Yeah, it doesn’t bother me so much. The fire ants, no more double vision. None at all. Even if I move my head. No. Wow. It’s It’s faster now, right? Yeah. Yeah. Less tremors. Much less. Yeah. Yeah. It’s less effort to talk and my brain fog. Everything is clear. Everything is bright.

Your overall pain before we started a few minutes ago. Yeah. You said it was 10 out of 10. Yes. And what would you say it is now? Maybe a six on the lower parts. my my my hand definitely um a four. Yeah, it’s lighter now. Even on my left, see, it’s not so It’s not so heavy.

You have a little more balance.

I think she’s more steady. Easier to move your arm up. Yes. Easier. It’s not It’s not so heavy. Definitely

if you have more control over it. You see, you couldn’t do that. None of that you could do. No, that was impossible for you to do. Now it works.

Now the pain is not so much. Definitely better. when I talk I don’t put so much effort and then uh my my stiff neck is gone. See, and that was a big issue. Yeah. Because all the time you complain about it. Yeah. Yay. Now I don’t crush the cup. And one hand. Yeah. One hand. One hand. You never have done one hand in the last two years.

much more steady. Wow.

Look at this. It was a superhuman effort for me to get up. And now it’s Yeah. Not so scary anymore. And I would walk and they would be scared that I’d fall. Yeah. Not as cold. Not as cold. Not as cold. That’s interesting. Yeah. I I’m not so cold anymore. Wow.

Look at this. Because now now you have like control over your I didn’t even uh hold the armchair. Yeah, exactly. It’s amazing. Yeah. No, seriously. It’s like, wow, this is exciting. Yeah. Thank you, doctor. You know, you’re you’re godscent. [laughter] You know, you have changed a lot of people’s lives. So God is using you for that. Thank you so much.

Perispinal etanercept is a method of targeting detrimental neuroinflammation using etanercept, a special anti-inflammatory drug, delivered utilizing a novel, non-invasive injection method.

Perispinal etanercept is NOT experimental. Perispinal etanercept has been used to treat more than 5,000 chronic stroke patients since 2010 at the Institute of Neurological Recovery.

Perispinal etanercept is NOT a spinal injection. The small needle utilized is much too short to reach the spinal canal or the epidural space.

No, it is not too late. Neuroinflammation can last for years, or even decades, after brain injury. Life-changing neurological improvements following perispinal etanercept treatment performed weeks, months, years, or even decades after stroke or brain injury are not uncommon.

Referrals are not required. The Institute of Neurological Recovery has received, and welcomes, referrals from neurologists, speech pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, primary care physicians, online stroke groups, and, of course, patients and their family members.
